Ken Pease obituary, 2013
WORTHINGTON, MA – Kenneth B. Pease, Jr. (1927-2013) passed away peacefully on June 20, 2013
with his loving family by his side. Ken was born on April 7, 1927 the son of the late Kenneth and
Ethel (Zarr) Pease.
He grew up and spent most of his life in Worthington. He attended Huntington High School and
Smith Vocational before joining the Army during World War II. He served with the occupational
forces in Germany. He retired from the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority in 1989 after 31 years of
employment.
Ken was active in his church and community. He served one term as a selectman and thirty years
as an Almoner for the Whiting Street Fund. He was a member of the Congregational Church, a
lifetime member of both the Worthington Rod and Gun Club and VFW Post 6645 of Russell. He was
a fifty year member of the Huntington Federal Masonic Hall Lodge.
During his rich life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping in southern Vermont, and traveling with his
wife. He always claimed superiority in his daily games of cribbage but when pressed would have to
acknowledge that it was his wife and not him who could brag about having a “29” hand. Above all he
received pleasure in the company of family and friends. In recent years his life was enriched and
probably prolonged by the love and antics of his great-grandchildren.
Ken leaves his devoted wife of 66 years, Barbara Palmer Pease; a son, Gary and his wife Nan of
Westfield; daughter, Gail Lucey and her husband Michael of Easthampton and daughter, Marcia
Estelle and her husband Stephen of Worthington. He has three surviving brothers, Richard Pease
and his wife Patricia of Tucson, AZ, Howard Pease and his wife Pamela of Westfield, Robert Pease
and his wife Bonita of Russell. He has two surviving sisters, Nancy Wickland and husband Glen of
Dalton and Mary McCready and her husband Peter of Huntington as well as a brother-in-law Donald
Watson of Holyoke. He was predeceased by his brother, James Pease; his sister-in-law, Carol and
sister, Nettie Watson.
He leaves seven proud and admiring grandchildren, Mark Pease and his wife Marisa of
Longmeadow, Rebecca Pease of Westfield, Kristen Pease of San Diego, CA, Stephen Estelle and his
wife Kristen of Goshen, MA, Erin Borsari and her husband Joshua of Plymouth, David Lucey and his
wife Carolina of Watertown and Thomas Lucey and his wife Kate of Chicago, IL. He has seven greatgrandchildren, Nicole, Mia, Michael, Ross, Rosemarie, Stephen and Arami. Admiration and love for
Uncle Kenny extends to nieces, nephews and beyond.

Taken on Buffington Hill Road; shop owned by Charles Kilbourn. Property later owned by Durgens, Okrents, and McAnulty. For use in republication of Papers on the History of Worthington. 'Woodworking shop of late Chas. Kilbourn, long a landmark in this town and a favorite gathering place for the men of the town in days gone by. Has been torn down. Mr.Kilbourn built a number of houses here in his day and was an expert cabinet maker. The Kilbourn property on Buffington Hill Road is now owned by Dr. and Mrs. R. N. Durgin.' Since it has been owned by Okrent (1980s) and Michael A. McAnulty (1990 to present).

This is printed on spotted newsprint and is sepia tone. According to Lois Ashe Brown, the Noah Pierce (a.k.a. Pearce) Tavern was taken down prior to 1900. (see post it on back of photo). On June 13, 1825, Lafayette and his entourage stayed at the Noah Pierce Tavern at which time its name was changed from Noah Pierce Tavern to the Lafayette House.' (identify for calendar of old Worthington inns). An attached piece of paper reads 'Tavern of Noah Pearce (sic)- Worthington, Mass. Later -- Lafayette House. One of oldest houses in town. Lafayette spent June 13, 1825 at this tavern en route from Albany to Boston by stage coach.'

Pierce (a.k.a. Pearce) Tavern, where Lafayette spent a night in 1825. The 'Lafayette Elm' under which he greeted townspeople the next morning is shown. Library is now on this site.' Lafayette was on his way from Albany to Boston for the laying of the corner stone of the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston. View from Four Corners. The elm was cut down when the highway department widened Route #112 in the 1920s. The Worthington Historical Society planted a replacement elm tree around the mid 1990s. The tree is stll there, in front of the library today. For use in republication of Papers on the History of Worthington.
The Lafayette House was also known as the Pierce (Pearce) Tavern. It subsequently fell into ruin and was demolished. In June 1825 General Lafayette spent the night here and greeted the townspeople under the Lafayette elm which is no longer standing. The picture also shows a tree called 'Lafayette Elm'.
